Points for Showing Up: FCK Puts Fan Loyalty Points in the App

F.C. Copenhagen fans queueing outside Parken before a match

F.C. Copenhagen has rewarded its most loyal fans with points for years. Now the points have moved into the club app, where fans can see how many points they have with a single tap. For Danish football, it says a lot about where fan engagement is heading.

The points themselves are nothing new. FCK has run its loyalty programme for many years, and the points have long decided who gets first access to the biggest and most attractive matches. What has changed is that fans can now see them, right there in the app.

Rewarding the fans who show up

FCK Point has nothing to do with discounts. You can't swap your points for a scarf or a beer. What they give you is first right: when a big home match, an away trip or a fan event sells out, the fans with the most points get the first chance to buy tickets.

The rules are simple. Every time a season card, or a ticket claimed through a subscription, is scanned at the stadium, the fan earns 20 points. The same goes for a linked away card at an away match.

The other side of the system matters just as much. A ticket subscriber who can't make a match needs to release their ticket. If they don't, and the ticket goes unused, they lose 20 points.

The idea is not to punish fans. It is to get seats back in use. Every ticket that isn't released is a seat left empty, and an empty seat costs more than the ticket. It could have been sold again. The fan who would have sat there spends around €10–20 on food and drinks during the match. And a full stand simply sounds better than one with gaps in it.

A fan's FCK Point history

(The fan's point history shows every match they have attended and the 20 points each visit earned, from Superliga games to European nights against Borussia Dortmund and S.S.C. Napoli.)

A number you can see is a number you care about

Why does it matter that the points are now in the app? Because a loyalty programme nobody looks at is a loyalty programme nobody changes their behaviour for.

When the score sits on your phone, every match becomes a small step forward. Skipping one costs you something you can actually see. And when the big away trip goes on sale, you already know where you stand.

Inspiration for other clubs

At Sportsinnovation, we help clubs build and run loyalty programmes like these.

Points are worth the most when they unlock something money alone can't buy. For a big club that might be a derby ticket. For a smaller one it could be a seat on the away bus, a training session with the first team or a limited shirt. Every club has something fans queue for.

Reward the behaviour you want, not only the money you take. FCK pay out for turning up. Penalties are clear and effective, but they can feel harsh to the fan who missed a match because of work or illness. Rewards feel friendlier, but they need to be generous enough to change anything.

Keep the rules short enough to explain at the bar. If fans can't work out how they earn points, they won't try.

And put it where fans already are. Most supporters open the club app on matchday anyway. That is where the score belongs.

The fans who show up every week

No loyalty programme replaces a good team or a good matchday. But clubs that know who their most loyal fans are, and give them something back, are in a stronger position when the stadium is full and when it isn't.
